Develops 3G standards for carriers who currently have TDMA systems (ANSI-136 or GSM) installed. Standards being developed are GPRS, EDGE and Wideband CDMA (also known as UMTS). This group is also responsible for maintaining and enhancing GSM standards through its TSG-GERAN, a responsibility that was trasnferred from ETSI. - 3GPP2 - Third Generation Partnership Project Two
Develops 3G standards for carriers who currently have cdmaOne or cdma2000 systems (e.g. IS-95, TIA/EIA-95 or IS-2000) installed. This group works closely with TIA TR-45.5 that originally was responsible for CDMA standards, but now just has responsibility for the US national CDMA standards. - ANSI - American National Standards Institute
The ultimate accolade for any standard is ANSI certification. This does not mean that ANSI has reviewed the standard, but that it has been circulated widely throughout the industry and that it conforms to their document design and publication guidelines. TIA standards, for example, start their public life as an IS- (Interim Standard) and then proceed within a few years to a full ANSI standard. The analog cellular standard started as EIA/TIA IS-3 and is now the ANSI standard identified as EIA/TIA. - ARIB - Assocation of Radio Industries and Businesses

The ITU is the global equivalent of ANSI for telecommunications standards. In fact, the world is divided into the majority of countries that adhere to ITU standards, and the US and Canada that tend to use ANSI standards. Under the Information Technology Management Reform Act (Public Law 104-106), the Secretary of Commerce approves standards and guidelines that are developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for Federal computer systems. These standards and guidelines are issued by NIST as Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) for use government-wide. NIST develops FIPS when there are compelling Federal government requirements such as for security and interoperability and there are no acceptable industry standards or solutions.
